Gas Network Investment (GNI) - plays a vital role in ensuring the transmission of Gas, both today and for future generations. Our Analysts look to predict future supply and demand patterns, such that we can develop the investment projects that will be needed for today and tomorrow. We work with Government in relation to the long term future of Gas and work closely with Regulation on our Price Control negotiation with Ofgem. We also play a vital role in looking after the assets on the system and the associated safety and integrity policies.
We are responsible for potentially over a billion pounds of investment a year, over the next Price Control period. As such we are a high visibility department that can offer a wide range of opportunities and the chance for our students to begin to build their profile in the organisation. We also have a number of recent Graduates in the team (as well as relatively recent Graduates now in substantive positions) and are well placed to provide a welcoming home to a student taking their first step inside a large organisation.
Degrees considered – a 2.2 or above in Environmental or Environmental / Mechanical engineering.
18 month Development Programme – 3 x 6 month rotations.
Market Operation - undertake the System Operator role for the Gas and Electricity market for Great Britain. We are responsible for balancing the supply and demand for both systems. You could be assessing outage scenarios to ensure our security standards are maintained; using and developing an extensive set of algorithms to determine the demand profile for the next week or integrating new tools into the control rooms to help staff manage the system in ever more complex scenario.
Market Operation, as the System Operator has a unique responsibility within National Grid to ensure that all the players in the energy market from Gas Shippers to Nuclear power stations can gain access to the market in a fair and balanced way. We interface across the industry and are a leading member of a number of European developments. The knowledge and system understanding gained within Market Operation has formed the foundation for the career of many of the company leader
Degrees considered – a 2.2 or above in Electrical or Mechanical engineering or a 2.1 and above in Maths or Business.

Gas Distribution:
Our People - We know what it takes to be successful and celebrate when we achieve it!
Our Presence - We are proud to serve our communities, keeping people safe and wam everyday. We have a 200 year heritage to be proud of and an exciting future ahead of us.
Our opportunity to grow - We operate in a challenging and constantly changing environment with exciting new opportunities.
Gas Distribution Operations - launching a career with Gas Distribution Operations will provide a unique opportunity to practise a broad variation of gas engineering disciplines and provide the chance to engage with a multifunctional field force from a leadership perspective whilst working in a direct customer facing environment.
Gas Distribution Operations has three principle functions including, Gas Emergency and repair activities which resolve internal and external gas escapes and repairs. Maintenance of above ground assets including pipelines, routine maintenance, pressure control and storage and Electrical and instrumentation processes. The replace and extend function operates in the construction arena replacing our underground assets.
Operations is the delivery arm of Gas Distribution and operates under a challenging regulatory regime where the expectations of our customers and stakeholders dictate the need to achieve a high quality of service whilst delivering our regulatory requirements.
The opportunity to gain a practical grounding in Gas Distribution activities provides a fantastic springboard into the wider disciplines with National Grid. The work is high profile, challenging and very rewarding.

Gas Distribution Network Strategy - is at the heart of the Gas Distribution business and carries out work that includes controlling how we safely operate our gas distribution network. We also determine how and when we replace or maintain 132000km of gas pipe and 700 installations that control the flow of gas through the network. There are six parts to the Network Strategy team.
The Distribution Network Control Centre (DNCC) controls the operation of the gas network to help ensure that gas gets to our customers safely. The team in the control room remotely operate about 700 installations to control the pressure and flow of gas around the country.
· The Network Design team ensures that the pipes in our network remain fit for purpose and have sufficient capacity for the gas that our customers need. This includes adapting to meet climate change objectives and we lead on helping customers in the “renewables” sector to develop new processes to connect sources such as Biogas to our network.
· The Asset Strategy & Investment team is responsible for ensuring that all of our assets (pipes and pressure control installations) get the investment they need to keep them properly maintained, safe and efficient. This includes making long term predictions about how much gas our customers will need and making business cases to secure the funding needed to maintain, replace or build new assets.
· The Network Integrity team is responsible for the integrity and safe operation of our gas network and the specification of the gas that flows through it. We manage the “Safe Control of Operations” which ensures that all of the work carried out on our network is done by competent people and according to the correct procedures
· The Engineering Policy team sets technical and engineering standards for gas network management and ensures that they keep up with the times in terms of technology, environmental considerations and modern construction methodologies. We also liaise closely with Health & Safety Executive and keep in touch with technical organisations throughout Europe and across the world
· The Innovation Delivery team coordinates the introduction of new ideas and technology into Distribution to make sure that we make the most of the benefits that innovation brings and that we stay at the forefront of the ever changing energy industry
Network Strategy delivers asset management capabilities to Gas Distribution. Our primary objective is to optimise the balance between risk, cost and performance over the lifecycle of our assets.
We need to make sure we know where our assets are, what we want from them, get the best value from them and be confident they are safe and reliable for our customers. We can provide opportunities to be involved in the day to day control of our network or at the forefront of asset investment, technical innovation, or the development of new and renewable sources of gas. Network Strategy is also a great place from which to meet and work with people from right across Gas Distribution.
