Emanuel Mugwanda - Power System Engineer
Before I joined National Grid I was a principal design engineer in electric power utility in Zimbabwe.
Working at National Grid really provides me with excellent opportunities in terms of my career development. I'm looking at a lot of exciting things that are going to be happening at National Grid in the years ahead and being a part of that really gives me the urge to go on.
I would say the Human Resources team organise a lot of things for us before we started work here - we had familiarisation tours where you are made aware of a lot of the issues that can come up living in the UK and working at National Grid and I think a lot of things are covered in that familiarisation week that we attended, But I think I could have done with more information about the cost of living in the UK.
A lot of things are different, the climate itself is different, the working culture is different and the social scene is also different, so being able to deal with all of that and giving 100 per cent to the job is the main challenge really.
I would say to anyone who wants to join National Grid this is an excellent opportunity. I think this is the right time to join the company because there are a lot of things in terms of technology and the way of doing things, and I think anyone would benefit a lot if they are part of the new, exciting challenges ahead.
