Community Work

We do more than provide energy. We touch lives. At National Grid, we play a vital role in the communities we serve by getting involved in a range of national and local community projects. That's where our employee volunteering programme comes in. It's an opportunity for you to make a difference to the people in your area and learn all kinds of new skills. That's got to be good for everyone.

The National Grid community volunteering programme focuses on themes critical to our business:

Education and Skills

Education and Skills

We're a business based on science and engineering, so we encourage employees to volunteer in relevant science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) projects in their local communities, especially with local schools to promote STEM subjects to inspire and motivate young people. We aim to tackle the skills gap in this area, creating a group of talented potential future employees.

Energy and Environment

Energy and Environment

Protecting the environment is extremely important to us and is a significant part of our reputation as a responsible business. As a National Grid employee you can participate in conservation-based team building activities at one of our environmental education centres or with one of our environmental organisation partners. You can also volunteer to work with local schools supporting energy efficiency projects. We are keen to raise awareness of local environmental and climate change issues amongst our employees and local communities.

Community Investment

Community Investment

We strive to be welcomed and seen as a valued partner in the communities we serve. We’ve helped build playgrounds, recreational gardens and help children learn how to read. We are official partner to Special Olympics Great Britain (SOGB), an organisation which provides sports training and competition to people with learning disabilities. The main element of our partnership is the employee volunteering programme where many National Grid employees have invested their passion, enthusiasm, and time to give something back to the communities we serve through the SOGB. So whether you have a level II football coach qualification, are a keen fundraiser or hobby photographer, there will be something in this community partnership for you.

We also encourage employees to be active in their local communities outside of the working day. Through a range of Employee Community Schemes, National Grid employees have the opportunity to:

• Apply for charity fundraising to be matched up to £400 per year through the company Matched Giving scheme

• Apply for a grant of up to £1,000 for your community organisation if you give significant volunteer time outside of work (i.e. as a school governor, Scout leader, sports coach etc)

• Donate to charity through your pre-tax salary, using the tax-efficient company Give As You Earn scheme.
